Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Fellowship

The Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Fellowship is a one- or two-year advanced training program for physicians interested in becoming leaders in the field of pediatric cardiac critical care. The program is non-ACGME accredited. Candidates must have completed a fellowship in anesthesiology, cardiology, neonatology, pediatric cardiology, or pediatric critical care medicine.

Trainees will gain in-depth clinical knowledge and technical skills necessary to care for critically ill infants, children, adolescents, and adults with acute cardiac disease and congenital heart problems. Areas of focus include pre-and post-operative management, mechanical circulatory support (ECMO/VAD), cardiac surgery, transplantation (including heart, lung, heart-lung, and heart-liver), utilization and interpretation of cardiac diagnostic testing, and implementation of quality improvement initiatives.

Educational opportunities are tailored to suit the needs and interests of each trainee. The program is highly integrated with other fellowships including pediatric cardiology, critical care medicine, neonatology, and anesthesiology to provide a broad range of interdisciplinary training, as well as research opportunities from the basic sciences to translational and clinical research.

Mission Statement

The Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Fellowship at UPMC is committed to providing superior clinical and academic training that delivers the highest quality care to critically ill and injured patients across the UPMC Health System, and that develops tomorrow’s leaders in Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care. Our multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to research, education, patient safety, and quality is integral to this training and enhances the program’s ability to improve and innovate in each of these areas. We seek to select and retain a diverse group of highly qualified candidates and foster their academic career advancement through broad clinical experience, scholarship, leadership opportunities, structured professional development, and robust mentorship.
