The MACRO research associate internship provides a paid research experience to University of Pittsburgh undergraduate students. Research Associates obtain hands-on clinical research experience by screening and enrolling patients for MACRO-supported research and by otherwise assisting the MACRO study coordinators. The 12-hours-per-week minimum commitment affords students exposure in the emergency department, operating room and intensive care units at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and UPMC Mercy Hospital.
MACRO Research Associates should possess:

- Responsibilities

- Learn about and understand a number of clinical research studies
- Determine patient eligibility for participation in those studies
- Coordinate collection of biological specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples
- Process biological specimens for analysis
- Perform basic data collection and medical record abstraction
- Assist study coordinators with the informed consent process

- Able to commit to nine-months of participation, including three months of intensive training
- Availability to work 12-20 hours a week, some of which may be weekends and nights
- Completion of University of Pittsburgh research ethics training
- Attendance at one research intern meeting per month
- Attendance at six faculty lectures per year
