Our critical care physicians and advanced practice providers deliver around-the-clock patient care for critically ill and injured patients across the UPMC Health System. These patients benefit from cutting-edge research pursued by the very same physicians who are at their bedside providing evidence-based care.
As influential leaders in the global medical community, we are known for groundbreaking clinical innovations and as champions of excellence in health care for the critically ill. Our faculty members are divided into two divisions: adult critical care and pediatric critical care.

UPMC ICU Service Center
The UPMC ICU Service Center was founded in 2016 to deliver the highest quality of critical care with the greatest degree of compassion for our critically ill patients and their families. Since its creation—and despite the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting the allocation of resources—the Service Center made significant progress on its mandate to build a critical care model that standardizes and integrates care delivery across the UPMC system.
The ICU Service Center focuses on an array of diverse initiatives aimed at mitigating scarcity of supplies and medications, reducing low-value care, and priming the health system to be operationally smarter and more efficient. The ICU Service Center prides itself on two key elements of success: first, a closely aligned working relationship with multi-disciplinary and cross-departmental clinical leaders and, second, a boldness to challenge assumptions which, in turn, empower ICU teams to embrace new models of care.
Rapid Response Teams
Departmental clinicians are also responsible for the Rapid Response Teams at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, UPMC Magee Women's Hospital, and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Rapid Response Teams are the on-site emergency resource for hospital patients who become clinically unstable, especially after hours.
Critical Illness Recovery Center
The Critical Illness Recovery Center at UPMC Mercy (CIRC) provides customized medical care to individuals who have survived a prolonged ICU stay. The CIRC multidisciplinary team helps survivors of critical illness address their physical, mental and emotional challenges—known as post-intensive care syndrome—with the goal of improving quality of life.
Organ Donation Support Team
Departmental physicians staff the UPMC Organ Donation Support Team to ensure adherence to current medical ethics for organ donation as well as to maximize recovery of viable donor organs. The Organ Donation Support Team collaborates closely with the not-for-profit Center for Organ Recovery and Education, one of 58 federally designated organ procurement organizations in the United States.
