Our critical care physicians and advanced practice providers deliver around-the-clock patient care for critically ill and injured patients across the UPMC Health System. These patients benefit from cutting-edge research pursued by the very same physicians who are at their bedside providing evidence-based care.

UPMC ICU Service Center
The ICU Service Center coordinates critical care services across more than 15 hospitals in the UPMC health system. Formed in 2016, the ICU Service Center helps to ensure we deliver the highest quality critical care with the greatest degree of compassion to our critically ill patients and their families. The ICU Service Center focuses on:
Optimizing care delivery and resource utilization Improving the patient and family experience, particularly for end-of-life care Expanding our telemedicine network across the region Establishing tertiary-level critical care for underserved, outlying communitiesRapid Response Teams
Departmental clinicians are also responsible for the Rapid Response Teams at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, UPMC Magee Women's Hospital, and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Rapid Response Teams are the on-site emergency resource for hospital patients who become clinically unstable, especially after hours.
Critical Illness Recovery Center
The Critical Illness Recovery Center at UPMC Mercy (CIRC) provides customized medical care to individuals who have survived a prolonged ICU stay. The CIRC multidisciplinary team helps survivors of critical illness address their physical, mental and emotional challenges—known as post-intensive care syndrome—with the goal of improving quality of life.
Organ Donation Support Team
Departmental physicians staff the UPMC Organ Donation Support Team to ensure adherence to current medical ethics for organ donation as well as to maximize recovery of viable donor organs. The Organ Donation Support Team collaborates closely with the not-for-profit Center for Organ Recovery and Education, one of 58 federally designated organ procurement organizations in the United States.
