Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

What We Value

The Department of Critical Care Medicine values the richness of a diverse community of trainees, staff, physicians and investigators. Through collaboration, education, and active efforts to reinforce a culture of inclusion, our team members strive to:

  • Respect the dignity of others
  • Teach and learn from one another
  • Promote inclusivity in the workplace

What is Diversity to Us?

Put simply, diversity is the myriad people who have the potential to be one of our patients or co-workers. Their diversity encompasses all dimensions of race, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, physical ability, religion, opinion and political thought.

We recognize that through a diverse and inclusive workplace, we will achieve better patient outcomes and experience more successful academic careers. This recognition is reflected in our hiring practices, our recruitment efforts, and in our day-to-day lives.

Healthcare professionals and community members stood in solidarity, reaffirming our commitment to a diverse and equitable society at the 2023 White Coats Against Racism and Injustice Kneel.

This annual event, born out of a commitment to fighting systemic injustices, is a multi-institutional movement throughout Pitt and UPMC campuses and hospitals.
