The Pediatric Simulation Center of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC provides medical simulation training in a non-threatening environment. Simulation provides caregivers with medical experiences that are readily available, customizable, and repeatable. The goal of the center is to create a safer treatment environment for our pediatric patients while increasing the effectiveness of education for health care professionals at all career and training levels. The Pediatric Simulation Center of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has over 27 current pediatric simulation courses and this number continues to grow each month. Courses are available for nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and many others. The center provides support for course development, including web support, curriculum development, and scenario programming.
The Pediatric Simulation Center of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is located on the 2nd floor of the main hospital and we also have another simulation suite in our emergency department. The center has a mobile simulation cart, allowing for in situ simulation anywhere in the hospital.
Melinda Hamilton, MD, MSc, is the director of the Pediatric Simulation Center of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. She is also an assistant professor of Critical Care Medicine and Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the associate director of pediatrics at the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER). Dr. Hamilton is a member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and facilitates several of the pediatric courses at CHP of UPMC.
Dr. Hamilton’s simulation interests include pediatric crisis team training including the organization of hospital crisis response and utilizing simulation as an educational tool for communication in critical care.
Our center is associated with the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education, and Research (WISER), located in Oakland and WISER provides much of our web and simulation technology support.
