Respiratory Care Services


The Respiratory Care Services (RCS) department provides under medical direction and technical supervision a full range of cardiopulmonary therapeutics for infants, children and adolescents in both inpatient and outpatient settings around the clock. CHP RCS ranked among top (7) best pediatric services in the US by AARC Times (October 2009).

Services include:

  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Noninvasive monitoring
  • Blood gas analysis in critical care areas
  • Administration of therapeutic gases, including a variety of specialty gases
  • Aerosolized drug delivery
  • Pulmonary clearance modalities
  • Home care preparation / teaching / trach tubes, etc .\

Unique Aspects

RCS provide a full range of service to patients.  The CHP RCS team have a passion to ensure the best service, equipment, and procedures are in place to provide the best care possible.  Some of the ways in which this is done include:

  • Specialty gases, (Nitric Oxide, Heliox, Hypoxic Gas Mixture)
  • Only facility with piped-in Heliox in all critical care units and the ED.
  • RTs integral part of physician rounds in all Critical Care Units.
  • Clinical Specialist RRT in the NICU
  • Therapists cross trained by Perfusion Services for ECMO
  • Extensive outreach support for pediatric / neonatal care;  Staff volunteering for a variety of camps for children, providing extensive RT support for underserved population in Honduras, Etc.
  • RTs can also branch out into subspecialties, such as Pulmonary Functions, Sleep lab, ECMO, Transport Team.


RCS services are provided throughout the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC   The main offices are located on the 5th floor of the main hospital.
