Regionalization of acutely ill, emergency care patients is recommended by the Institute of Medicine and multiple critical care societies. And yet, little is known about the most efficient, optimal strategy to provide the right critical care to the right patients at the right time. This project uses Monte Carlo simulation to explore allocation of critically ill patients within a cohort of 16 hospitals using triage by emergency medical services personnel. We will assess outcomes for patients, hospitals, and EMS agencies using a unique, linked database of EMS encounters and hospital discharge data.
