Critical Illness Stress Induced Immune Suppression Prevention Trial

PI: Joseph A Carcillo, MD

Funding: National Institute of Child Health and Development

Stress causes children in the pediatric intensive care unit to be at increased risk for secondary infections.  We performed a randomized controlled study comparing a protein supplement to supplementation with zinc, selenium, glutamine and metoclopramide.  The latter supplement had no advantage over the former in immune competent children but it significantly reduced secondary infection in the immunocompromised children.  We are now planning studies looking at lactoferrin supplements to reduce secondary infection in the immune competent hosts.
