This study evaluated free cortisol levels on the first day of admission to our pediatric intensive care units. Levels were increased in relation to severity of illness. DNA was collected from these patients and cortisol metabolism genetic polymorphisms are being analyzed to test the hypothesis that cortisol production is related to genotype as well as to severity of illness.
