The CRISMA Research Fellowship is a two- to three-year research training program for motivated physicians and scientists who seek an academic career in critical care medicine. We provide our post-doctoral fellows with an intensive experience in translational, clinical, or health services research centered around the science of cardiopulmonary organ dysfunction and critical illness.
Most CRISMA research fellows enter the program from one of our clinical fellowships. We also accept highly qualified non-physicians as well as individuals who have received clinical training at another institution.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis without deadline, although we recommend submitting materials at least four months ahead of the proposed start date. Selected applicants will be invited for an in-person or remote interview.
All CRISMA fellows must be US citizens or permanent residents holding doctoral degrees (either MD or PhD). Applicants who do not meet this requirement or who are not enrolled in one our clinical fellowships can receive training under special circumstances as a CRISMA Visiting Scholar.
For applicants currently in one of our clinical fellowships, we will work to integrate the research training period with your clinical schedule. For other applicants, the start dates are flexible.

CRISMA fellows train in one of five academic areas:

These research areas intersect with the extramural research grants of our training faculty and reflect the essential translational basis of critical care medicine, which requires an integration of cell and molecular biology, organ system interaction, and novel therapies that impact patient-centered and socially relevant outcomes.
Training activities are based on four inter-related pillars:
- Intensive mentorship, in which fellows meet weekly with their primary mentor and monthly with a training group
- Didactic education, in which fellows take structured coursework in biostatistics and clinical epidemiology, in most cases working toward a Master’s degree
- Experiential research, where fellows conduct 1-2 mentored research projects through to completion, publishing their work in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international scientific conferences
- Participation in a community of learners, in which fellows interact with our critical mass of like-minded trainees and attend the weekly CRISMA research conference
These training activities are complemented by rigorous training in the responsible and ethical conduct of research and informal monthly “career development breakfast discussions” with the program director. In addition, trainees avail themselves of all the research infrastructure in CRISMA, including advanced biostatistical and data management support.

Training is supported by a National Research Service Award (T32) from the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This T32 has been continuously funded for over 20 years. Additional departmental support is available for applicants currently enrolled in one of our clinical fellowships.
