UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Pediatric Cardiac ICU

The Pediatric Cardiac ICU (CICU) is one of few ICUs in the country especially designed to meet the needs of pediatric patients with both congenital and acquired heart disease. The 12-bed CICU also provides care for adult patients who require ongoing medical care due to a history congenital heart disease. Each year, the CICU admits more than 700 children.   

The CICU specializes in patients with:

  • Complex congenital heart surgery
  • Heart transplantation
  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Ventricular assist devices (VAD)
