The multiple organ failure and its support is the raison d'être of our relatively young field, critical care medicine. Starting with the late Peter Safar, MD, we know that public awareness of our profession is as important as our clinical care, education, and research. As recently as May 15th, 2012, our colleagues across the Atlantic revisited the same problem by showcasing a mobile ICU in front of the EU headquarters (LIFE-Priority). This week’s Nature Medicine has a special section on sepsis with the goal of increasing awareness about sepsis in the scientific community at large. The interviews and reviews with experts, including with our chair Derek Angus, MD, will definitely get the attention of our researcher colleagues and hopefully increase the work efforts in the field of critical care medicine.
