On February 21, 2012 the world of Critical Care Medicine lost one of its leaders, E. David Bennett, FRCP. Dr. Bennett was a visionary leader in the field of acute patient care and long term outcome from critical illness, whose seminal studies over the past 25 years form the basis of our present-day practice. In that regard , he lectured at our Critical Care Medicine Grand Rounds on January 24, 2011 on “Goal Directed Therapy: Past, Present and Future.” David was not only a highly respected academician but a close friend to many of us in Pittsburgh. He leaves behind a legacy of excellent clinical and translation research scientists who called him their mentor, including Mervyn Singer, FACP who also was a Grenvik lecturer, Andy Rhodes, the present ESICM President, Andy Webb, Owen Boyd and Maurizio Cecconi, to name a few. These trainees rank as some of the world’s leaders in critical care medicine. He is survived by his wife, Catherine. He will be missed.
