Congratulations to Dr. Douglas White on a newly funded R01 from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), entitled A Trial to Improve Surrogate Decision-Making for Critically Ill Older Adults. The grant funds the conduct of a multi-center, randomized controlled trial of an intervention to improve surrogate decision making and families long term psychological outcomes. The Four Supports intervention centers on the use of a Family Support Counselor to provide emotional support, communication support, decision support, and anticipatory grief support to families and to provide tailored feedback to clinicians about families’ needs. The intervention will be compared to an education control in ICUs at three western Pennsylvania hospitals.
When asked about the grant, Dr. White responded by saying “This is a tremendous opportunity to translate principles of decision science into a novel intervention and to assess the impact on patient outcomes, family outcomes, and health care utilization.”
