Dr. Christopher Seymour leads study showing consequences of increasing sedation at night in the ICU

Fri, 08/10/2012

In a study released in Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Seymour collaborated with investigators at Vanderbilt University to analyze data from 140 patients in the Awakening and Breathing Controlled Trial (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0140673608601051). They found that increases in benzodiazepines and propofol at night, beyond daytime doses, were associated with delayed liberation from the ventilator and more coma and delirium during the first five days in the intensive care unit (ICU). These data help renew our focus on reducing overall sedative exposure for mechanically ventilated patients – irrespective of the time of day.
