Michael R. Pinsky, MD, Vice Chair of Academic Affairs was awarded the title Honorary Professor of the Universidad de Iberoamerica at a ceremony in San Jose, Costa Rica on March 18, 2010. This event occurred at the end of a two-day Hemodynamic Monitoring Symposium that he sponsored for the Universidad de Iberoamerica in collaboration with Professor Juan Silesky, President and Professor Juan Padilla, Dean of the School of Medicine of the Universidad de Iberoamerica. This symposium addressed practical aspects of basic and advanced hemodynamic monitoring techniques including minimally invasive monitoring and echocardiography. Dr. Pinsky invited Dr. Emmanuel Rivers, a past University of Pittsburgh Critical Care Medicine Distinguished Alumnus awardee now in Detroit, along with Dr. Daniel DeBacker from Brussels, Belgium and Dr. Pierre Squara from Paris to join him in this high level symposium. Unbeknowst to Dr. Pinsky, the Executive Council of the Universidad de Iberoamerica had met 16 February 2010 and elected to confirm upon him the title Honorary Professor of the University.
The award ceremony followed the final lecture of the symposium. “I was both surprised and deeply honored to have been awarded this degree. This meeting and my award are part of a continuing close relationship our Department has had with the Universidad de Iberoamerica over the past two years. And this relationship will continue into the future” Dr. Pinsky said. In support of this commitment, Dr. Derek Angus, Department Chair and Dr. John Kellum, Vice Chair for Research, are scheduled to give another series of lectures to the Universidad de Iberoamerica later this fall.
