Dr. Michael R. Pinsky graduated in 1974 with a MD, CM from McGill University in Montreal. He completed medical residency and pulmonary fellowship at Stanford University in California, followed by an additional fellowship in pulmonary medicine and physiology at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes in Baltimore. After this extensive clinical and research training, he was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh in 1981 and has been a full professor since 1991. Dr. Pinsky spent a sabbatical year (1997-98) at the famous University of Paris V (La Sorbonne) that resulted in a Doctor Honoris Causa Degree at this same insitution in 2002. He currently serves as Vice Chairman for Academic Affairs in our Department of Critical Care Medicine. He is ABIM certified in both Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Pinsky is an excellent ambassador worldwide for our CCM program in Pittsburgh. With 220 refereed articles, 200 book chapters, over 300 invited review papers, and some 70 abstracts published, to date, he is a constantly sought for speaker, who has presented his research in nearly 500 lectures throughout the world. Dr. Pinsky has been supported in the past by over $9 M in research grants and is currently involved in several research projects with funding over $20 M. His publications and presentations are an extremely strong drawing card for our CCM Department with numerous international visitors, researchers and CCM fellows seeking training and experiences at Pitt.
Dr. Pinsky was elected to the Faculty Assembly of our University Senate in the year 2000. He served as Vice President of the University Senate, 2005 - 2007. During those years, he spearheaded the move that increased the number of medical school faculty positions in the Faculty assembly from 4 to 8. He has been chairman of several Senate committees and has served as program director for two University Senate plenary sessions. Because of his excellent qualifications and outstanding service over the past decade he was overwhelmingly elected president of the Senate to begin on July 1, 2009. We congratulate Dr. Pinsky for his innumerable accomplishments leading to this eminent recognition of his talents.
