Janice Knapp will be leaving the Department at the end of January 2010 after many years as the Administrative Support leader for our Department. Ms. Knapp’s academic administrative career is quite impressive. She came back home to Pittsburgh in 1989 after working at the University of Minnesota for 21 years. She initially worked in the Financial Services Division of Allegheny General Hospital. Realizing that her interest lay primarily in clinical affairs, she first moved into the Department of Anesthesiology at AGH and then in 1995 to University of Pittsburgh Physicians in a senior administrative role at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Importantly for us, in 1999 she made her final moved to our young division to become the Executive Assistant to the then Chief of the Division of Critical Care Medicine, Mitchell Fink, also new in his position, having just arrived from Boston. Ms. Knapp was the executive assistant to Dr. Mitchell Fink during the turbulent and exciting years of transition from a Division of Critical Care within the Department of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine until we became the first academic Department of Critical Care Medicine in the United States. She witnessed the growth of our clinical and research roles and takes pride in seeing this very organic thing called the Department become something greater than the sum of its parts. For the past two years she has focused her efforts primarily on the academic side of the department, overseeing faculty appointments, reappointments and promotions. Her attention to detail and having complete promotion packets has smoothed many a faculty member’s promotion process. There is no person in the Department who has not worked with Janice at one time or another and we all will miss her focused, determined and dynamic personality following her retirement.
