Congratulations to Dr. Marie R. Baldisseri for being selected to receive the University of Pittsburgh’s 2011 Chancellor’s Distinguished Public Service Award. This honor is in recognition of her national and international humanitarian work in public health service. Dr. Baldisseri has been a regular volunteer for numerous medical missions and was instrumental in designing and implementing the first intensive care unit in the capital city of Swaziland in Sub-Saharan Africa. She has placed her attention on teaching critical care in resource-poor areas where health care providers have no formal training in critical care as well as educating health care workers to prepare for natural disasters. She is the CEO and founder of the “Critical Care Disaster Foundation” (www.ccdfoundation.org) dedicated to working and teaching in areas preemptively before a disaster strikes and after an event has occurred. With her experiential knowledge, Dr. Baldisseri continues to engage in educational outreach to students within the University and colleagues within the profession.
Dr. Baldisseri will be recognized at the 2011 Honors Convocation with other outstanding faculty members and students and honored more personally at a reception later in the term for her outstanding record of public service.
