Much of the educational content consumed in the Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program at the University of Pittsburgh comes in the form of self-paced mini-lectures delivered through our Canvas learning management system. What you may not have noticed is that the Canvas video player supports a range of playback speeds. By selecting the rate of playback, it is possible to listen to a 20 minute video in as little as 10 minutes.
Of course, the goal is not to get it done in half the time, but rather to comprehend the material in a more time efficient manner. Increasing video playback speed is not for everyone; some may find that slowing down a video actually has benefits on occasion. Nonetheless, experts claim that 1.4X to 2.0X is a range that many people can effectively use.
It reminds me of that old joke: “My father was so good at the piano that he played Chopin’s Minute Waltz in 51 seconds.”
