Dr. Gunn graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS (1987), and the University of Minnesota with an MD (1996). He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis (1999) followed by fellowship training in Critical Care at the University of Pittsburgh (2001).   He serves as medical director of UPMC’s  Surgical Trauma ICU; medical director of UPMC’s Respiratory Therapy Department, and chief of service, CCM Department. 

He is recognized both locally and nationally as a leader in the clinical interface between EM and CCM.  He is the SCCM representative to the American College of Emergency Physician’s joint collaboration with the American Medical Association on physician performance measures.  He chairs the American Academy of Emergency Medicine’s Critical Care Taskforce.  Dr. Gunn was a co-author on an important white paper, endorsed by the national societies for EM and CCM and jointly published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine regarding CCM training for EM physicians.  He also serves as a regular contributing editor to the Yearbook of Critical Care’s Emergency Medicine section. 

He is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians as well as the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). He has been a fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine since 2003. 

Dr. Gunn developed an interest in clinical research as an NRSA fellow.  As a clinician-educator, he has focused his research activities on supporting the research role of the department through facilitating clinical research. He has published eight peer-reviewed articles and ten abstracts.  He received the Research Citation Award for Outstanding Abstract at the 2004 SCCM Conference. 

Dr. Gunn assumed responsibility for the Department’s CTP in 2004.  He serves as a liaison with principal investigators within the department and provides study design and regulatory support for intra-department investigator initiated trials.
