Dr. Darby graduated with honors from the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine in 1981 and completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas in 1984. Following fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh, he was recruited to the Critical Care Medicine faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 1986. From 1987 through 2008, Dr. Darby was the Medical Director of the Trauma/Neuro ICU where his clinical and investigative interests were focused primarily on Neuro-intensive care. In 2008, Dr. Darby took on a new role in developing a new clinical service as the Medical Direct of Critical Care Outreach. In this role he has overseen the hospital’s Rapid Response System and the development of a new clinical rotation for Critical Care Fellows and Medical residents that is focused on Medical Emergency Response Teams and patient safety. In collaboration with the region’s local organ procurement organization, Dr. Darby has also developed a unique team of intensive care physicians who are dedicated and proficient in caring for critically ill organ donors with the goal of improving organ donation outcomes locally, nationally and internationally. As the leader of the hospital’s rapid response system and a member of the patient safety committee, Dr. Darby’s ongoing clinical and investigative pursuits are focused on identification of hospital system vulnerabilities as well as identification of human factors and interventions that may have utility in improving patient safety and reducing morbidity and mortality of hospitalized patients.
